IATM Statement of Policy - GVI Class Action

The recent outcome of the GVI Class Action has raised numerous issues regarding the status of Tour Managers (Tour Directors). In view of the importance of those issues to Tour Managers and to Tour Operators, the International Association of Tour Managers (IATM), being the only international organization representing Tour Managers worldwide, makes the following statement of policy on behalf of its members:

"Over many years, our Tour Manager members have repeatedly stated their desire to retain their freelance (independent contractor), status and have no wish to become conventional employees of Tour Operators. There is therefore little likelihood under the present circumstances that there will be any pressure from our members to institute similar class actions, and the IATM Board of Directors would strongly discourage any such action.

Our primary concern as an Association is the welfare and status of Tour Managers. What the GVI class action has thrown into sharp relief is the financial and professional value placed on Tour Managers by Tour Operators; in this respect alone we welcome it. There is little doubt that the status of tour managers and the rewards of tour managing have steadily been eroded year on year. If, as a result of this class action, IATM can promote a positive discussion with Tour Operators as to how they can give greater recognition and value to the work of freelance (independent contractor) professional Tour Managers, then it will produce a beneficial outcome for both parties.”

The statement above was agreed at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Tour Managers (IATM) held in London on Sunday, 7 November, 2004.
